**** UPDATE – Fall of 2015 we purchased a new home and constructed another birdroom. Click here for information about that construction project. The birds are very happy (which makes us the same)!
When we purchased our home in 2008, it had a 3 season glass sun porch attached that was like a sauna in summer and freezing in the winter. It was a room with really no use. I dreamed of a room to house the birds.
In 2009, the glass walls were torn down and replaced with standard walls and windows, and an 8 foot glass slider peering into the backyard.
A vaulted ceiling gives the birds lots of room to get height when loose flying.
After a few months of work and paint…… and it was finally finished! As I moved from pets to breeding stock out here, I moved in appropriate and roomy cages for them. I keep a rack of 4 smaller cages that are for holding newly fledged babies. A java tree stand gives the birds a place to hang out and look into the backyard.
UVA/UVB Full spectrrum lights adorn the cages which is important for a birds health and mental well being. All of our babies are cage bred, meaning individual parents are chosen and housed with only their mate. This allows controlled breeding for improvement of the line. The breeding cages we use are so large it keeps the birds very happy, but limits the numbers or pairs that we can keep. We therefore are very choosy about the birds kept for breeding. Only the best stock is bred.
The room is especially cozy in the evening. If I didn’t have other housework to keep me busy, I would spend all evening out here!
Our birds have a beautiful, clean and wonderful place to live and I feel blessed to be able to care so well for them. God willing, I will be at this for another 30-40 years……
