United Airlines no longer ships birds. We have been using Delta for the last couple of years and they do a great job. That said, they are more expensive and the cost has gone up to $250 which includes a crate you keep.
***** May 1, 2018 — Update I hope is temporary.
United Airlines is no longer shipping birds. Rumor has it they have it “under review” but until they resume, we have switched to Delta Airlines. They offer the same service, but it is more expensive. $200 per shipment vs. the $150 of United. This price includes the crate.

My experience with shipping birds is that they tolerate it very well. They are shipped via United Pet Cargo in a hard carrier that they find very cozy. The employees handling them are very careful. They are kept in climate controlled areas at all times.
The cost to ship to the contiguous 48 states of the United States is $150 which includes ground transportation to the airport as it is a 2+ hour trip. The crate is an additional $35 or can be shipped back to us for a refund of your deposit. Up to 4 birds can usually be shipped in one crate for the initial ship price.
We play with the birds in and around the crate so that it is not a scary place, it is a safe one.
They ship with food and water and I include moist fruits in case the water is spilled. A few sprigs of “birdie candy” millet will be with them and they find it very comforting.
The Lineolated, Bourke’s and Scarlet Chested Parakeets are so hard to find, shipping is a great option. I am always happy to take lots of pictures or video of the bird you are interested in so that you know what you are buying.
